Flachau as a pioneer – First municipality of Salzburg decides to build wind turbines

Date:

It is a novelty in the state of Salzburg: Flachau decided on Wednesday evening to be the first municipality to build wind turbines at an altitude of 2000 metres. But it will be years before the first wind turbine is built.

It is the first concrete step towards the realization of a wind farm in Salzburg. During the town council meeting on Wednesday evening, Flachau unanimously decided to redistribute 250 hectares of land.

Mayor Thomas Oberreiter confirms this: “We are the first in the country where it is concrete. As a municipality, we stand behind this project.” Eight to eleven wind turbines will be built on the Windsfeld at an altitude of 2,000 metres: “Depending on the result of the site investigation,” Oberreiter adds.

Years of procedures
The wind turbine project has been in the works since 2020. The next step is to submit an environmental impact assessment (MER). The corresponding application must be submitted by the end of 2023, says Oberreiter. When asked when the first wind turbine could be there, the local manager emphasized: “Realistically, no earlier than 2027.” And that only if there are no delays before the administrative court. As is well known, the Alpine Club is against the wind turbine project and could file a complaint, just like the National Environmental Ombudsman.

Oberreiter also knows this: “But it is important that we persevere. We will be the first municipality to look into this.” Given the current crises in the field of electricity and gas, it is very important to stimulate sustainable forms of energy. The mayor of Flachau also believes that “the procedures must be accelerated” on this point.
