Peru’s ex-president Pedro Castillo has been jailed for 18 months. His ouster and arrest last week had sparked massive, ongoing protests and riots (see video above) across the country, leaving several people dead.
With its ruling, the Supreme Court followed a request from the public prosecutor’s office.
This justified the existing risk of going into hiding, among other things, with the fact that Castillo had sought protection in the Mexican embassy in Lima after his dismissal by parliament.
Ex-president suspects conspiracy
Castillo was removed from office by parliament last week for “moral incompetence” and later arrested. The previous president sees this as a political conspiracy.
After his resignation, his previous deputy, Dina Boluarte, was sworn in as the new head of state. Since then, there have been repeated protests across the country against the change of power.
Peru in state of emergency
About 800 foreign tourists were stranded at the world-famous Inca site of Machu Picchu on Thursday due to unrest in the country. “Less than ten people” from Austria were detained. First, the train route to the attraction was closed. The reason for this was concerns about the safety of Peru’s state railways, which feared calls for demonstrations over Castillo’s arrest.
In response to the violence, the government declared a national state of emergency on Wednesday. In parts of the Andean country, air and rail traffic was halted, which is one of the reasons why hundreds of tourists were stranded. The police presence in Lima and other cities was stepped up. Thousands of demonstrators demanded the resignation of Castillo’s successor Boluarte, the dissolution of parliament, early new elections and, of course, the release of the imprisoned ex-president.
