The meetings, shielded from the media, started at 10 a.m. on the first call and at 10:30 a.m. on the second. The 1,700 cooperative members of Orona and the 2,800 of the group of companies that make up Ulma (with nine different companies) voted in a long day on their organizations’ proposal to leave Mondragon.
At the entrance to the Orona meeting, in the Illunbe bullring in San Sebastián, cooperative members, most of whom did not want to make statements to the media, noted that they prefer “not to get wet” about the development of these meetings . Many of them came from Oñati and Legazpi on fifty buses.
For their part, Orona’s partners have also started arriving at Galarreta’s headquarters in Hernani around 09:00. The media have not been allowed access to take pictures of the meetings and it is expected that both cooperative groups will publish separate announcements detailing the decision taken.
The Minister of Economic Development, Sustainability and Environment of the Basque Government, Arantxa Tapia, stressed this morning, before knowing the result of the vote by the members of Orona and Ulma, that it is an “important day” and that there must be respect the decision of the partners.
