A “Krone” reader had to look twice when she held the note in her hands after her visit to a burger bar in Vienna: 2.70 euros for an empty glass? The lady was clearly annoyed as the container was not meant for take away. If something like this happens to you, there is a very simple explanation – the “Krone” asked…
The woman was visiting a burger bar in Vienna’s 15th district on Thursday afternoon when her mouth almost fell open after ordering food. She had ordered a menu at the restaurant – “All you can drink” was on it. So far, so good: but the bill was charged 2.70 euros for a glass. However, this was not a “to-go” glass that you can then take home – no, the guest must return the container after consumption.
Fortunately, the matter was quickly resolved
The customer showed little understanding for her bill: what else should she have been drinking? Contacted by the reader, the “Krone” at the restaurant asked what the rechargeable glass was about. The matter was quickly resolved. “Because food and drinks have different VAT rates, the drink has to be split on the bill,” explains the restaurant’s branch manager. So drinks would include 20 percent sales tax, food 10 percent.
Eight drinks “all you can drink”
However, because each guest can choose from eight different drinks as often as he likes, only the glass is mentioned on the bill. “We want to be more sustainable and protect the environment – that’s why we use a glass and not a paper cup,” explains the restaurant’s manager. That is a considerable amount for the branch manager. After all, you can drink as much as you want.
Fortunately, there was no difference between the price on the menu and the amount on the Viennese woman’s receipt. Only the glass had caused confusion.
