According to the government, there is a risk of fuel leaking from a sunken cargo ship off the coast of Tunisia. The Tunisian environment ministry announced on Saturday that an emergency plan has come into effect to prevent an environmental disaster. All necessary measures would be taken for this.
The ship is located in the Gulf of Gabès about seven kilometers from the coast and has about 750 tons of diesel on board. Floating barriers should prevent spilled fuel from spreading, it said. It also needs to be vacuumed. In an earlier statement, the ministry said the situation was under control.
According to the ministry, the ship was en route from the Egyptian port of Damietta to Malta. Due to bad weather, it had to anchor off the coast of Tunisia on Friday evening. The water penetrated six feet into the engine room and the cargo ship sank. The crew of seven had been thrown overboard.
The island of Djerba, popular with holidaymakers, is also located in the Gulf of Gabès.
