Doubts about information – Kremlin shows video of rescued Moskva sailors

Date:

After the sinking of the Russian missile cruiser Moskva in the Black Sea, the Defense Ministry in Moscow released a video allegedly showing members of the crew. The Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy, Nikolai Yevmenov, met with the sailors in Sevastopol. The Russian Black Sea Fleet has its main base in the city on Ukraine’s Crimean peninsula, which was annexed in 2014.

The nearly half-minute clip shows dozens of young men in black uniforms. Exactly how many there are is difficult to estimate because of series edited together. On Twitter, some users said it could not have been the 500 or so crew members who would have been on the Moskva at the time of the accident.

Russian pride plummeted
Seven weeks after Russia’s war against Ukraine began, the Moskva (“Moscow”) was badly damaged and subsequently sunk on Wednesday. There is disagreement as to whether the flagship of the Russian Black Sea Fleet was hit by Ukrainian Neptune missiles or, according to the Russian side, damaged by an ammunition explosion.

Other information about the crew
According to US information, there were up to 500 crew members on board. Moscow said the crew had been evacuated before the boat sank. A spokeswoman for the South Ukrainian armed forces, Natalya Humenyuk, said a storm prevented Russian lifeboats from reaching the burning Moskva River and saving the sailors.

The captain of the cruiser may have sunk with the ship. According to Ukrainian sources, Anton Kuprin Valerievich was killed in the explosion and the ensuing fire on board.
