Researchers have discovered a new lizard species in a national park in Peru. As the board of nature reserves in the South American country announced on Friday, the new species was found in the Otishi National Park in the Andes in southeastern Peru.
Scientists discovered the small lizard, which belongs to the genus Proctoporus, at an altitude of more than 3200 meters. The biologists particularly noticed the smooth scales on the lizard’s head.
The males are said to have a dark gray to black neck, chest and underparts, while females have a light gray nape and dark gray chest and underparts.
According to Peruvian authorities, 20 species of the genus Proctoporus have been discovered so far, 18 of them in the mountain forests of Peru.
