An industry is turned upside down. Employees are needed in all areas and in particular there is a lack of qualified personnel. Burgenland uses a regional system to anticipate a calamity in good time.
Healthcare workers and nurses: challenging professions with a future. What has long been clear to industry experts is now putting pressure on the market across Austria: a lack of personnel everywhere. Burgenland is largely spared from the critical development.
“Care must be guaranteed. We have made this increasingly important topic a focus of our work,” emphasizes Leonhard Schneemann, councilor for social affairs. The employment model was the first step, with the fixation of the care bases, the country set the next milestone.
System is being reorganized
In concrete terms, this regional system will completely reorganize the “intermediate level” of care. This applies to home nursing, the various forms of assisted living, daytime activities for the elderly and nursing and social guidance. Burgenland is divided into 28 regions with a total of 71 care bases.
“This not only saves costs, the new model should also ensure long-term care for those in need of care and high quality,” explains Schneemann. But quality in healthcare also means more staff. Big plus: the operator responsible for the region must guarantee security of supply. Job rotation also makes employees’ lives easier. Nevertheless, organizations such as Caritas are looking for qualified personnel in addition to nurses.
