At least 23 people have been killed in protests in Peru since the state of emergency was declared

Date:

The protesters are asking President Dina Boluarte to dissolve Congress and call new general elections.

Peruvian authorities on Saturday afternoon updated the total death toll following the demonstrations that erupted in Peru following the ousting and arrest of former President Pedro Castillo, bringing the total death toll to 23.

The Regional Health Directorate of the Province of Lima (Diresa) has announced the death of one more person as a result of clashes at Ayacucho airport between protesters, who attempted to take over the terminal, against Peruvian forces.

The latest deaths come amid fierce protests across Peru following the ouster and arrest of former President Castillo on December 7. The protesters are asking President Dina Boluarte to dissolve Congress and call new general elections.

The Peruvian government has declared a state of emergency at the national level for a period of 30 days in response to the protests in support of Castillo. Similarly, the executive branch has declared a state of emergency on the national road network, allowing the military to take to the streets in an effort to protect the country’s strategic points.
