Elizabeth II’s Burning Chapel Gets Over 26,000 Visits in Edinburgh

Date:

The coffin has been in the church of Saint Giles for twenty-four hours and was transferred to London this afternoon

After queuing all afternoon and night, more than 26,000 people paraded through Edinburgh’s Saint Giles Church to bid their last farewell to Elizabeth II in a burning chapel lasting twenty-four hours. The coffin will be transferred to London this afternoon. The remains of the late monarch will arrive at Northolt airport, in the English capital, and then be taken to Buckingham Palace, where they will remain until tomorrow. It will then be transferred in procession to the Palace of Westminster, where it will wait until the morning of the state funeral, next Monday.

“More than 26,000 people have already been given the chance to pay their respects,” the Scottish government said on its Twitter account. The doors of the Scottish Cathedral are still open, although they have closed the entrance queue to prevent the crowds from continuing ahead of the funeral procession.

The stream of churchgoers has been constant all day, including at night. According to the BBC, authorities estimated the waiting time to access the temple’s interior at 45 minutes on Tuesday morning.

A different situation is expected in London. From tomorrow, the capital of the United Kingdom will be the scene of the largest vigil in history until the state funeral on 19. The British government is already preparing for the crowds expected in the area in the coming days from Buckingham Palace, where it is said the newspaper ‘The Times’ long queues of more than twenty hours and more than eight kilometers are expected.

Thus, London is finalizing preparations to receive at least up to 750,000 people who wish to say goodbye to the late monarch for the last time; a number in attendance “much higher” than the 200,000 who paraded in front of the Queen’s mother when she died in 2002, they point from Downing Street.

“Keep in mind that the queue is expected to be very long. You will have to stand for many hours, possibly overnight, with very little opportunity to sit down as the tail continues to wag. Keep this in mind before you decide to attend or bring children,” the Executive advised yesterday.
