For 11 days, a farmer in a village in southeastern Turkey fed her cow named Birican, which was trapped after the earthquake. Now aid workers have freed the animal, broadcaster CNN Türk reported on Friday.
The cow, freed after three hours of rescue work, is now receiving medical care, according to the broadcaster. “Today I’m very happy, thank God,” farmer Tuncay said in a video (see below). “I love my animals like my children.”
The sale of her milk ensures the survival of the family, the woman told the state news agency Anadolu Ajansi. Videos showed how the woman climbed into the rubble with hay to get to her cow in recent days.
Goats and chickens were killed
The Tuncay couple from Dardagan village in Adiyaman province survived the earthquake with minor scratches. However, her animals were hit harder. Only two of her cows reportedly survived. Their 15 goats and 30 chickens were killed.
Almost 44,000 dead already
The quake with a magnitude of 7.8 on the Richter scale shook the Turkish-Syrian border area last Monday. The number of confirmed fatalities has now risen to almost 44,000. Turkey has already suspended rescue operations in some regions.
