Halloween riots – 50 suspects are no longer under investigation

Date:

After the riots on Halloween night in Linz, the public prosecutor’s office has filed three more charges. The youths – a 15-year-old Kosovan, a 16-year-old Syrian and an 18-year-old Afghan – are said to have thrown pyrotechnic objects at police officers. The investigations against 50 suspects have been discontinued, the public prosecutor said at a press conference on Friday.

There are a total of eight charges on suspicion of serious communal violence and attempted grievous bodily harm. According to public prosecutor Ulrike Breiteneder, five suspects between the ages of 15 and 21 are detained, while the three suspects are on the loose. These previously impeccable teenagers admitted to being in the center of Linz during the riots, but they only described themselves as “passive observers”.

No trial dates yet
One of the detainees, a 21-year-old Syrian, will appear in court on March 2. No trial dates are yet known for the other detainees. In the case of the “new charges”, the objection period of two weeks still runs, Breitender gave an overview. She assumes “that’s it” and expects no further charges.

No crime proven”
For 50 of the defendants, “no contribution to the crime could be proven”, so no further investigation will be launched against them. Rather, these people would have made a “significant contribution to the clarification”, according to the spokeswoman for the prosecutor’s office.
