The Russian state-owned company Gazprom could lose its rights to use the gas storage facility in Haidach (Salzburg). After the company had not used its storage facility in Ukraine since the start of the war, the Austrian government responded with an amendment to the Gas Industry Act. Anyone who has stored too little gas must now offer or return the unused capacity to another company. If not, the reminder will be revoked completely.
In concrete terms, Gazprom is thus obliged to immediately offer its “(…) unused booked capacity” to others or return it to the storage company GSA. If the company does not comply with this, Gazprom subsidiary GSA must withdraw storage capacity that is used for less than ten percent as of July 1. If he does not, he will lose his own rights as a storage company.
According to the law, E-Control must decide on the latter. But she can look for another company, for which, according to the “Wiener Zeitung” Astora or OMV are possible.
Storage not filled since March
Gazprom’s storage facility in Haidach has not been full since March 29, according to data from the interest group Gas Infrastructure Europe (GIE). Significant amounts were last stored in mid-December. The fact that the memory is no longer used is also the reason why its revocation is now conceivable. Since Haidach has so far only been connected to the German grid, the government has also determined that the gas storage must be connected to the Austrian grid.
