The fire brigade was called to the Wiener Wurstelprater on Sunday because a mechanic had injured himself so badly during a popular ride at a height of about 20 meters that he could no longer go down under his own power.
His colleagues alerted the fire brigade at 11:45 am after the industrial accident. The victim was injured during maintenance work on the chain carousel.
Rescue operation on the chain carousel
Height rescuers from Vienna’s professional fire brigade managed to climb up to the worker, secure him and put a rescue blanket on him to help him abseil. At the same time, firefighters installed two safety cushions and a rotating ladder as a precaution.
A rescue via the inner area of the tower was not possible due to a lack of space. In order to rescue the mechanic from his plight as quickly as possible, a height rescuer abseiled down with him.
No other people injured
The employee was then taken to hospital. How the accident happened is still under investigation. Other people or visitors were not in danger. A total of 25 emergency services were on the scene.
