Date:

Most of them must be unknown in this episode from church history: Gregor V, who was probably born in Stainach in Obersteir, sat on the Petri chair more than a thousand years ago. However, his pontificate did not last long – he died as pope in Rome after just four years.

Although the Italian media gave the Emeritus the Viennese Archbishop Christoph Schönborn a few days ago, he will probably follow Francis on the Holy Stuhl. As is known, the cardinal is not there for the conclave; It has no right to vote because of the age limit of 80 years. In any case, he was considered a “papiver” in 2013, but would not have been the first Pope from Austria at the time.

Because “we” have been pope before and we Styrian! However, this church -historical sensation was more than a thousand years ago.

A Stainacher becomes Pontifex Maximus
In fact, the legend says that the only representative of Christ of the red-white-red origin of the earth in Stainach, who belonged to the Duchy of Baiern: Bruno von Kärnten, the later Gregor V. There are no historical sources for it, but we want to believe it. He came in 972 as the second son of the marriage of Otto von Wormsgau and Judith van Carinthia in the Ennstal to the world, where his father had a rule.

Bruno was a career like Prince like Prince of the Church as a noble sprout, and so he started training in the city of the German bishop. While his teacher, the Greek, John Philagathos, who later became his opposite pope and therefore a bitter opponent, acted.

During a trip to Rome, on which Bruno, his relative King Otto III, accompanied, the news of the death of Pope John XV. On which Otto III. The spiritual had to choose the successor of Petri Stuhl-the age of just 24 years. A few days after his dedication, Gregor V crowned the only 16-year-old Otto to the emperor.

Intrigues and power struggle
However, Gregor’s term of office was overshadowed by intrigues and bloody power struggle, as usual in the early Middle Ages. So the Roman nobility defended himself against the founding of the German -Spire Paus – and with John Philagathos lifted his opponent and teacher on the papal throne.

But the uprising did not last long: Gregor V. and Otto III. Save back, drove the opposite pope, let Philagathos mutilated in his hands, tongue, nose and ears, after which he was driven by Rome on a donkey who was spot. After only four years as Pope, Gregor V died at the age of 27 in Rome, probably from Malaria.
