Heavy rainfall has led to dangerous flooding in the northwestern United States. Authorities in the state of Vermont are warning of the rupture of a dam that has reached its capacity limit.
“The devastation and flooding we are witnessing throughout Vermont is historic and catastrophic,” said Governor Phil Scott. The flooding has been compared to the aftermath of Hurricane Irene in 2011, which killed several people. Vermont’s capital, Montpelier, was particularly hard hit, with much of downtown flooded. Photos showed kayakers paddling along a flooded road.
In the neighboring state of New York, the death of a woman was reported Monday as a result of the exceptionally heavy rains. The 30-year-old drowned in Orange County while trying to escape with her dog from a house surrounded by water, a county spokesman said. The region around the Hudson River, which leads to New York City, was particularly affected.
Wildfires in Canada, heat wave in Arizona
Other extreme weather events will affect the Southwestern United States and Canada. Temperatures in the city of Phoenix, Arizona are feared to be approaching 50 degrees, and Canada is experiencing an unprecedented severe wildfire season. The dense clouds of smoke even enveloped some major American cities such as New York and Chicago.
