Two days after the huge aquarium burst into a Berlin hotel, the first major chaos has cleared up. However, many questions remain, such as the cause. On Sunday, several specialized companies investigated the site of the accident.
“The clean-up work in the outdoor area has been completed so far. Reclamation work is still taking place in the underground parking garage and the company has made great progress there,” says Fabian Hellbusch, spokesman for building owner Union Investment. Surviving fish were distributed to other aquariums.
The search for the cause continues. For example, the American company Reynolds Polymer Technology, which was involved in the construction of the burst aquarium, announced that it would send a team to Berlin to investigate the incident. As reported, the 16-meter high Aquadom aquarium with 1,500 fish burst open early Friday morning in a Berlin hotel. After a loud bang, a million liters of water from the destroyed plexiglass cylinder were distributed, including in the hotel and on the street.
Two injured
According to the hotel, two people were slightly injured, an employee and a guest. At least six shops in the building complex were damaged. According to Hellbusch, the building is not in danger of collapsing. Experts will come to assess the damage from Monday. “At this time, there is no indication that there is anything criminally relevant in the room,” said a police spokeswoman.
People were lucky that the hotel was even less busy in the morning than later. It was also terrible for the animals: almost all the fish in the aquarium died. There is no timetable yet for the reopening of the hotel. “It is not yet possible to say whether the Aquadom will be rebuilt or whether an alternative destination is possible,” the building owner said over the weekend.
