Several loud explosions were heard in Kiev and in the region around the Ukrainian capital early Monday. It was initially unclear whether the explosions were air defense systems – which destroyed the drones – or impacts.
Kiev region governor Oleksiy Kuleba said there had been a drone strike.
According to him, Ukraine shot down nine Iranian Shahed drones in Kiev airspace. “The air raid alarm continues in Kiev,” the army said on Telegram. “The enemy attacks the capital with ‘Shahed’ barrage. The air defenses are deployed.”
According to the Russian news agency Interfax, Russian armed forces are going to start tactical military exercises in Belarus. “The final assessment of the combat capability and combat readiness of the units is made by the command at the final stage of coordination – after conducting tactical exercises of the battalion,” Interfax reports, citing the Russian Defense Ministry.

It was not immediately clear when and where the exercises would be held in Belarus. The Belarusian defense ministry said in October that 9,000 Russian soldiers would be sent to the country as part of a “regional pooling” of troops to protect its borders.
