Love handles have a positive effect on many common diseases, according to a study from the US state of Georgia.
The research team, led by Alexis Stranahan of the University of Augusta, had examined the influence of body fat on inflammation in brain regions associated with dementia and stroke. While in men excess fat is stored around the organs and leads to the beer belly, in women the fat is stored under the skin (subcutaneous) and often leads to cellulite.
Estrogen as a natural anti-inflammatory
In an experiment with overweight female mice, the rodents had their excess fat removed by liposuction. Dr Stranahan: “Once the subcutaneous fat was gone, estrogen levels in the body also dropped and there was a sharp increase in inflammation in the brain. Estrogen is a natural anti-inflammatory.” Conclusion: Cellulite therefore reduces the risk of diseases such as dementia and stroke.
However, obesity remains unhealthy
However, the researchers warn women against deliberately eating flab. Because being overweight would also increase the risk of death from chronic diseases such as heart disease. There will now be further clinical research into the effects of the loss of subcutaneous fat on other brain areas and medicines will be investigated on this basis.
