Kiev wants winter aid – ambassador: ‘Europe is being terrorized with nuclear energy’

Date:

The Ukrainian ambassador to Austria, Wassyl Chymynez, hopes for help from Austria before the approaching winter. “The missile strikes on Ukraine will continue. Many people will be without electricity, hot water and heating,” he said Friday in an interview with APA on the occasion of the Day of the Defenders of Ukraine. Chymynez also called for further sanctions, for example against the Russian nuclear company Rosatom.

Ukrainians urgently need generators, warm clothes and gear, and winter-proof sleeping bags, Chymynez explained. At the same time, the ambassador thanked the Austrian federal government, the state governments and the population for their previous support. “We are very grateful to the Austrian government and society for supporting Ukraine despite the difficulties caused by inflation.” In view of the missile strikes, Ukraine’s air defense system is particularly essential.

Ambassador: ‘Europe is being terrorized with nuclear energy’
Sanctions against Russia would work, Chymynez stressed. So it is clear that the Russian armed forces would not have spare parts and adequate equipment. However, there are still many gaps in the sanctions that need to be closed. The diplomat pointed out that not all Russian banks and not all members of President Vladimir Putin’s regime would be sanctioned. The state-owned Rosatom group is also excluded. After the occupation of the Ukrainian nuclear power plant in Zaporizhzhya, Russia is said to “terrorize Europe”.

Run on nuclear weapons feared
In 1994, Ukraine gave up the world’s third-largest nuclear arsenal. If the nuclear power Russia threatens a country without nuclear weapons, then this is a threat that goes beyond Ukraine. “Many other countries will try to acquire nuclear weapons because this appears to be an effective tool to defend their own security.” 83 percent of Ukrainians are now in favor of joining NATO.

“It’s time to stop fearing Russia,” Chymynez stressed, citing Ukraine’s armed forces who have fought effectively, fearlessly and with self-sacrifice. Now it becomes clear “how great the misery is,” the ambassador said, referring to the lack of discipline, poor morale and lack of equipment of the Russian soldiers. “We show that it is possible to beat Russia”. Zelenskyj also emphasized in his evening video speech on Thursday that the reservists called up by partial mobilization are being misused as “cannon fodder”. The Russian army is currently sending “thousands of conscripts to the front,” Selenskyj said.

If Russia wins, “Ukraine would no longer exist”
When asked about the peace negotiations, the ambassador emphasized: “The Ukrainians are the first to want peace.” However, Russia should not win, because “Ukraine would no longer exist,” Chymynez said. “If Ukraine does not win, the result will be that Putin will invade more countries and the Russian ‘values’ will spread across Europe.” All negotiations should therefore be based on Ukraine regaining its territorial integrity and sovereignty. Kiev cannot negotiate with Putin, who is violating UN statutes and international law.
