“It’s cruel” – Zelenskyj demands help for Georgia’s ex-president

Date:

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is urging the imprisoned former president of Georgia to seek treatment abroad. “Everyone has probably seen how Mikheil Saakashvili’s health is going. I appeal to the Georgian people and Georgian authorities,” Zelensky said.

Mercy is needed, especially as Christmas approaches. What is happening to Micheil now is cruel. That does not suit Georgia. It must be stopped.”

The 54-year-old must be transferred to a medical facility in Ukraine, Europe or the United States. Saakashvili had started a new hunger strike last week because he was not allowed to attend a court hearing in Tbilisi via video conference.

The Georgian ex-president was arrested in October 2021 on charges of abuse of office (see video above) when he returned to his homeland after a long exile, which he spent mainly in Ukraine. In Ukraine, his positions included President Selenskyj’s reform officer and governor of the Odessa region.

Georgian authorities say Saakashvili is faking to force his release. Saakashvili has not been seen in public for months.
