Huge income gap – women earn significantly less than men

Date:

Women in Austria still earn significantly less than men. The average gross annual income of all employees was 31,407 euros in 2021 – men earned 37,707 euros and women only 24,309 euros. The difference between the sexes was greatest among white-collar workers. To earn above average, women needed a college degree, while men needed a technical college degree.

As shown in the Court’s income report, the number of dependent workers increased by 10.8 percent between 2012 and 2021, from around 4.1 million to 4.5 million. Compared to 2012, 1.4 percent more women had a full-time job all year round and for men that was even 10.2 percent more. However, the growth was mainly in part-time work: here the number of jobs increased by 14.4 percent for women and 14.9 percent for men.

Gap hardly available only among civil servants
In 2021, women in all job groups earned less than their male colleagues. The average gross annual income of employees in 2021 was 23,248 euros – women earned 13,434 euros and men 30,030 euros. The average gross salary for employees amounted to 35,302 euros, women received 26,953 euros and men 49,642 euros. Temporary workers received an average of 37,770 euros – the average income for women was 34,134 euros and for men 43,971 euros. Meanwhile, civil servants earned almost the same amount, namely 60,974 euros (women) and 61,673 euros (men).

Varies by part time and industries
The largest income differences between men and women occurred among white-collar workers. A large part of the differences between manual and white-collar workers can be explained by the high proportion of women working part-time. In 2021, approximately 81 percent of part-time workers will be women and 33 percent of full-time workers will be women.

In addition, the earning potential is generally lower in sectors in which predominantly women work. This includes healthcare, housing and gastronomy. One of the sectors with the highest incomes is energy supply, where significantly more men than women worked.

Even a university degree earns women less money
At all levels of education, men will earn significantly more than women by 2021. For example, women with a full-time job needed a university or higher professional education diploma to earn above average (45,522 euros gross for full-time employees all year round), while a technical higher professional education was sufficient for men. The largest income differences occur between women and men who have completed an internship (women: 32,905 euros, men: 44,515 euros), closely followed by university graduates. Even if women graduate from university, they earn significantly less at 54,140 euros than their male colleagues at 72,002 euros.

pension gap
There are also major differences in pensions. While men earn an average of 29,574 euros gross per year, the average gross annual income of women is significantly lower at 18,638 euros.
