The banner that read “Advent, Advent, the Earth Burns” on the golden sphaera ball is gone. After just a few hours, the protest sign of the movement “the earth is burning” was removed. Salzburg climate activists added this on Tuesday evening.
Before noon the golden orb shone again in its familiar splendour. The banner is gone. However, the city of Salzburg does not know who removed it.
With this action, the activists wanted to take the protest out of the university and into society. “Because it is obvious: in addition to the changes that have been fought for at the university, a fundamental reconsideration is needed in society as a whole. Because our earth is on fire!” explains activist Elena. The banner on the golden sphere was framed by fabric flames.
Open letter to the federal government
The activists advocate a mobility and energy transition. Away from the car and towards bicycle and public transport. At the federal level, they are also pushing for an immediate phase-out of fossil fuels. Together with other representatives of the movement, they wrote an open letter to the federal government. “Because this fossil dependency fuels the destructive climate crisis, finances Russia’s terrible war of aggression, and fuels the inflation that threatens our very existence,” says the activist.
The activists of the movement recently occupied three lecture halls in the Unipark Nonntal in Salzburg for four weeks.
