Peru’s Congress is reconsidering electoral advance to 2023 as death toll rises

Date:

The measure passed with the support of 94 deputies, while 25 voted against and another five abstained.

The plenary session of the Peruvian Congress approved this Tuesday to reconsider the project to bring forward the 2023 general election, as requested by the executive, following an earlier vote rejecting that initiative. The measure passed with the support of 94 deputies, while 25 voted against and another five abstained.

The organs of the Peruvian electoral system consider December 2023 as the earliest date for a new presidential and legislative election process. The terms are five years in the Andean country, so the current legislature should end in 2026.

At the same time, authorities increased the total number of deaths in the protests that rocked Peru to 26 on Tuesday. A miner lost his life in the Arequipa region, in the south of the country, due to clashes at Ayacucho airport between protesters and security forces as protesters tried to take over the terminal, according to local media. Six other people were injured.

Of the 26 deaths so far, 17 came after the state of emergency declared by the Peruvian government last Thursday, which will last for 30 days. Protests rocked the country following the December 7 impeachment and arrest of former President Pedro Castillo. The protesters are asking President Dina Boluarte to dissolve Congress and call new general elections.
