War in Ukraine – American circles: disagreement in Russia about offensive

Date:

In Russia, according to US information, opinions differ about a possible renewed offensive in Ukraine. “There are certainly some who I think want to step up offensives in Ukraine,” said a senior US State Department official. “Others have serious doubts about Russia’s ability to actually implement this.” The US has indicated that there is a “significant shortage” of ammunition in parts of the Russian army.

This is an increasing problem for the Moscow government, it said. Meanwhile, according to Ukrainian media reports, the Russian army has resumed moving stronger troop formations to the border between Belarus and Ukraine. In addition to tanks, armored personnel carriers and transporters, various military equipment was also brought to the border, Ukrajinska Pravda and the Unian agency reported on Tuesday, citing the Belarusian hacker collective “Hajun Project”. The group follows all actions of the Russian troops stationed there.

Is Moscow planning an offensive through Belarus?
The observers assumed that it was either a transfer of Russian troops from northern and central Belarus, or a short transfer to joint maneuvers with the Belarusian army on the border with Ukraine. The units moved to the border are currently not strong enough for offensive action, it said.

The Ukrainian military leadership has suspected for some time that Russia could again try to enter Ukraine from Belarus. At the start of the war ten months ago, a Russian battlegroup advancing from Belarus had reached the outskirts of Kiev, but was then heavily fought over by the Ukrainians and forced to retreat.

Heavy fighting in the east
After Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s visit to the frontline city of Bakhmut in the east of the country, heavy fighting broke out in the area again. “The enemy continues its efforts in offensive operations against Bakhmut and Avdiivka,” the general staff said in Kiev on Tuesday night. Reports from the region included tank attacks, artillery attacks and isolated Russian air strikes.

To the north of it, Russian troops tried to reach better positions near Kupjansk. There, the Russian army used “the whole spectrum” of artillery against at least 15 settlements, it said. The information from Kiev could not initially be independently verified. Surprisingly, Selenskyj had visited Bakhmut in the morning and distributed medals and gifts to the soldiers.
