In France, hundreds of speed checks are now being modernized to make more than just speed offenders pay. Critics and motoring clubs suspect that this is a complete rip-off.
Not only will the number of permanently installed radar equipment in France be increased to 4,160, some of the old traps are also being eagerly upgraded. You can also register and automatically report violations of the seat belt requirement, failure to comply with the minimum distance and the mobile phone ban.
However, these plans were not made public. On the contrary, the government had betrayed itself with the new budget for the coming year: as a precaution, more money was allocated for postage costs and the printing of penalty letters.
Auto club sees ‘scam device’
Critics such as the automotive club “40 million d’automobilistes” see a “scam machine” of the state at work. “The radars do not contribute to safety, but only to supplement the state treasury,” a club spokesperson explains.
Grass currently costs between 90 and 375 euros in France, and even up to 1,500 euros if you exceed the speed limit by more than 50 km/h. Anyone who drives through a red light pays 135 euros. Violations of the safety distance cost a minimum of 135 euros.
Not wearing a seat belt is also punished with €135, as is using a mobile phone while driving – even with headphones.
