At the end of the year, Schönbrunn Zoo is in a double festive mood: In addition to the 270th anniversary, there is a baby boom among koalas and co.
So many “young stars” at once are a rarity, even at Schönbrunn Zoo with its 667 animal species: this year’s offspring included orangutans, as well as koalas, arctic wolves, squirrel monkeys and giraffes.
The little darlings of the public are now giving the Tiergarten another welcome surge in visitor numbers after the Corona-related slumps. At least as important for species protection and science is the birth blessing of the endangered Mhorr gazelle, the Waldrapp chicks and the endangered native animal species, the survival of which is assured at the Tirolerhof.
Special recognition for the 270th anniversary
Unlike in 2021, the zoo only had to say goodbye to a few of its protégés this year: a young giraffe cow “Sofie” was put to sleep after birth, just like polar bear “Nora”.
Despite unforeseen challenges – from aid for Ukrainian zoos to high energy costs for the animal enclosures – the anniversary of its 270th birthday was also a successful year for the zoo, and with a very special birthday gift: the zoo was this year for the sixth time Awarded as the best zoo in Europe.
