They block major roads and penetrate airport runways. Some occupy universities, others puncture tires on SUVs. Climate activism has developed several facets, but has entered the middle of our daily lives. But which means justify which end?
In Munich it is “taped” for the time being. On December 10, the Bavarian state capital issued an order “for the preventive aversion of danger”. Until January 8, “roadblock rallies related to climate protests” are prohibited unless they are announced in advance under the right of assembly.
Just three days later there was a raid on Germany with eleven house searches against the “Last Generation”. One of the charges: “Creation of a criminal organization”. Aftermath of an attack on an industrial facility in April.
No radical forces in Graz yet
Climate action has long since penetrated Styria, as evidenced by traffic blockades or the occupation of the university. Material damage, for example by the “Tyre Blusers” (tyre extinguishers), as in Vienna, has not yet arrived in Styria.
“The protest has not yet radicalized here,” the police confirm. The Graz delegation of the “last generation” also distanced itself in a statement from attacks on banks or coal-fired power plants that existed in other countries.
“Methods are not effective”
The actions are discussed everywhere. When asked by the “Steirerkrone”, Graz deputy mayor Judith Schwentner (Greens) showed understanding of the activists’ concerns, but clearly limited: “The methods they choose are not effective, they are probably due to despair and a sense of fainting. . Generating attention and publicity should not be at the expense of other people, damaging property and endangering people is to be rejected.”
In any case, one thing is clear: the climate remains a hot topic.
