The wave of fraud with so-called shock calls in Tyrol does not stop: After two seniors lost a total of about 200,000 euros to criminals on Monday, a 75-year-old Innsbrucker was targeted by such unscrupulous crooks on Tuesday. He would hand out tens of thousands of euros and jewelry because his daughter, who supposedly suffered from Corona, was in mortal danger and urgently needed an expensive injection.
This strong story, with which fraudsters want to make a lot of money quickly, is new in Tyrol. The 75-year-old received a phone call just before 3 p.m. on Tuesday. On the phone: A woman who spoke High German and identified herself as senior physician Dr. Mueller spent. said the alleged doctor that the man’s daughter was seriously ill with Corona and could barely breathe. So you urgently need an injection, which is very expensive, “says the police.
Victims wanted to trap scammers
But the smart pensioner saw through the scammer and recognized the trick. And he apparently wanted to condemn her and her accomplices. “He claimed to have a five-figure euro amount at home. The caller replied that that was not enough and asked for jewelry. The 75-year-old replied that he also had valuable jewelry at home.” The brazen caller was finally satisfied and said an ambulance would come to collect the money and jewelry.
Eventually, however, the caller got too hot. Perhaps she had noticed that the pensioner was up to something. After more than an hour, she finally hung up the call and didn’t pick up again.
Money handed over after “accident daughter”.
Unfortunately, such scammers had more success on Monday: A heartbreaking wail and cry – a woman from Innsbruck (88) thought she had her daughter on her cell phone after a serious traffic accident. Subsequently, an alleged judge took over the conversation. And had the frightened pensioner hand over a deposit of more than 50,000 euros to a collection agency.
That same day, around 3 p.m., a similar call reached another woman from Innsbruck (77). This time it was an alleged lawyer who demanded money for the daughter. The victim took a six-figure sum from the safe and handed it to an unknown man. After that, the scammers demanded that she take more money from home, which was impossible due to the lack of further reserves. The unscrupulous thugs then arranged a meeting place near the court, where the daughter was to be picked up. Of course no one ever showed up.
Perpetrators cause stress, break down when asked
The scam is to evoke emotions with shocking phone calls. It is difficult for the victims to think rationally at such moments. Why don’t those affected check with the real daughter or the police before handing over money? “Fortunately, that’s what happens. But then the perpetrators stop the fraud attempt immediately, they are very careful,” says Hans-Peter Seewald from the LKA Tirol. He speaks of more than 200 reported cases this year in Tyrol alone, and concrete damage has occurred about 20 times.
German-Polish family clan adopted
The Munich police presented a prevention campaign these days, the detectives said: “The main perpetrators belong to a German-Polish family clan.”
