A fire has broken out on the Admiral Kuznetsov, Russia’s only aircraft carrier. The warship that was berthed at the Murmansk shipyard in northern Russia had to be evacuated, the Russian state news agency TASS reported on Thursday. Initially, nothing was known about the cause.
According to the authorities, the fire was quickly located and extinguished. According to official information, there were no damages or injuries. The source of the fire was therefore not in the engine room, but in the cabins on the left side of the ship. The cause can currently only be guessed at. However, the fire evokes memories of incidents that were most likely acts of sabotage against Russia during the attack on Ukraine.
Ship already burnt down in 2019
The Admiral Kuznetsov was launched in 1991. In 2017, the aircraft carrier must be repaired and fully modernized. Since then it has been at the shipyard in Murmansk. In 2018, the ship suffered a leak when a floating dock sank. A year later, Admiral Kuznetsov himself caught fire. Two people died and 14 were injured.
Since then, repairs have continued. Actually, the warship should sail again in 2021.
