On Thursday, more than 60 refugees will be picked up from tents in Spielfeld and distributed to permanent accommodation in Austria. This prevented a hunger strike, orf.at reported. However, the uncertainty for the refugees does not end there: about 40 people have to stay in tents.
“The information we as the police now have is that on Thursday more than 60 refugees or asylum seekers will be picked up from Spielfeld and taken to an accommodation somewhere in Austria,” police spokesman Gritz Grundnig told ORF Styria. On Wednesday afternoon, some 20 refugees gathered in the parking lot in front of the border crossing for an unannounced demonstration. The police recorded the identities of the participants and reported the meeting to the district authority. After about an hour, the people dispersed again without incident.
Hunger strike did not start at all
According to the “Kleine Zeitung”, they had notes in their hands in which they pointed out their situation in German. For example, it said: “I have been in the tent for 20 days” and “We are on a hunger strike. We want a normal life like everyone else. Thank you.” But according to the information available to ORF, the hunger strike has not even started yet. All the people who lined up on Thursday received breakfast and did not refuse it, Grundnig said. According to the police in Spielfeld, fewer refugees are currently waiting for a permanent accommodation than the week before Two large tents are provided for temporary accommodation.
cold and uncertainty
According to the refugee initiative “Border Crossing Spielfeld”, the people at the meeting were not making demands, but making requests. They worry about the uncertainty and the cold. At the moment, after showering, they have to go back into the tent through an open-air area. After more refugees arrived on Thursday, some 40 people were left behind in the large tents in Spielfeld.
