Five for Christmas – Van der Bellen pardoned 40 people this year

Date:

The federal president’s traditional Christmas amnesty has released five people this year. As usual, the cases had been submitted for clemency by the Justice Department. In 2022, a total of 40 prisoners were pardoned by head of state Alexander Van der Bellen.

Together with the Department of Justice, the president grants pardons throughout the year. In most cases, pardons restrict information from criminal records so that those pardoned can show impeccable credentials for job hunting.

Released 15 Dec
The five people who were pardoned just before Christmas would not commit any more crimes. The unspent portion of their sentences is conditional on three or five years’ probation, so they were released early from prison on December 15.

They have few or no previous convictions and have behaved in a disciplined manner while in detention. Those who stay in Austria have a place to live and financial support. Foreign prisoners are deported in accordance with foreign law decisions.

88 people in 2020
In 2021, Van der Bellen pardoned a total of 75 people: 12 cases were early parole, 63 cases were pardons, restrictions on information. As of 2020, the Federal President had pardoned 88 people, including 17 on early parole.
