Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki hopes for close cooperation with his Italian counterpart Giorgia Meloni in the reform of the EU. “Poles and Italians are tired of the rules of the European bureaucracy and want to renew the EU. We want to renew the EU with Meloni,” explains Morawiecki.
“The common points with Meloni’s agenda are a Europe of homelands rather than a European superstate. Poles and Italians want real democracy. We want to renew the EU by returning to its founding principles,” the Polish prime minister said in an interview with Italian daily La Stampa.
“We are faced with a choice between real solidarity between equal states and one superstate in which the largest countries ultimately hold the trumps,” said Morawiecki.
Ask about new voting rules
He also called for new voting rules in the EU. “Either there is unanimity or the tyranny of the strongest. Those who want the abolition of unanimity want to pursue their own interests. Smaller states could lose their voice and have to look for political ‘godfathers’ to represent their interests,” the Polish prime minister warned. According to Morawiecki, forgoing unanimity is “the path to political paternalism”.
As for immigration, “anyone wishing to enter the EU must respect international law”. “Those who enter Europe illegally must be deported. This is not a matter of violence, but of the law,” said the prime minister.

Morawiecki also spoke on the issue of the war in Ukraine. “We must do everything we can to help Ukraine, because if Kiev falls, Moscow will have a clear path to conquer Europe. Europe should arrange the conditions so that withdrawal is the Kremlin’s only option. We would certainly be much closer to that point if sanctions against Russia were imposed more quickly and the promised military aid reached Kiev,” the Polish leader said.
