Big heart shown – “Krone” readers donate 2 million euros for Ukraine

Date:

So far, the “Krone” readers have donated two million euros for Ukraine. Thanks to this solidarity, Caritas has been able to help 500,000 refugees since the outbreak of the war. But Ukraine still needs more help.

“Mom, let’s go” – one sentence, and a 24-hour flight from bombed Kiev followed. “We were in the bathroom when it happened. The walls were shaking. And so were we,” says Alina. “Many villages had already been destroyed. We couldn’t stay any longer,” she says, pointing to a photo: daughter Alina in the bomb shelter in Kyiv. Less than a month later, the two are safe. In Mukachevo, in the far west of the country, they are taken care of by Caritas. The seven-year-old first had to get used to life without the attacks.

“Once again the ‘Krone’ readership has shown great heart
Caritas has already sent 150 tons of relief supplies to Ukraine. One of the centers is in Uzhhorod. From there, the aid transports are sent to the war zones. Since February, 500,000 people have been able to receive survival aid thanks to the ongoing emergency aid projects of Caritas and the parcel campaign of the Swiss Post. This is made possible, among other things, by our large Ukraine campaign especially for children: The “Krone” helps.

“The willingness to donate is overwhelming. In a short time two million euros were donated. Thank you very much! The readership of ‘Krone’ has once again shown great heart,” says Caritas chairman Michael Landau.

Not a sprint, but a marathon
Klaus Schwertner, head of Caritas Vienna, traveled to Ukraine and saw with his own eyes: “The most overwhelming thing is the solidarity of the people.” Young and old are in action. Eva is probably the youngest volunteer helping in Uzhhorod. Tray in hand, the eight-year-old scrapes between tables at the little ones’ “dolphin meal service,” bringing food, serving empty plates, clearing up. The country faces so many challenges: psychological care for helpers and refugees, but also aid in the east of the country, which is hardly accessible due to the lack of corridors.

Klaus Schwertner: “The help here will require a lot of stamina. It’s not a sprint, it’s a marathon.”
