Twenty people were killed in a fire at a retirement home in the West Siberian city of Kemerovo on Saturday night. An investigation is now underway into violations of fire safety regulations. According to the state news agency Tass, there would have been no approval for the operation of the home.
The fire broke out on Saturday night in the shed-like building in a district of the industrial city, authorities said. According to Russian civil protection, 20 people were killed. Two other people were taken to hospital with burns. The cause of the fire is believed to be improper use of an oven heater.

The facility was scheduled to be inspected on Dec. 7, but a fire safety inspection representative was turned away, officials from Russia’s Civil Defense Ministry said. The authority published photos and videos of the burning and destroyed building. More than 80 people and 28 vehicles were deployed in the snow in freezing temperatures.
The home was run by a pastor as an institution for the homeless. According to his statement and that of the owner of the building, the operation should not have been approved.
Serious fires continue to break out in Russia due to violations of security measures. Thousands of people die every year.
