“Investigation Flaws” – Protests: An Iran Death Sentence Overturned

Iran’s Supreme Court has overturned a protester’s death sentence. There were flaws in the investigation, judicial authorities said on Saturday. The trial against the Iranian is now being conducted again at the court that handed down the death penalty.

Saman Saidi Jasin allegedly tried to kill security forces and sang revolutionary songs. The Kurd Jasin works as a rapper and deals with inequality, oppression and unemployment in his lyrics. He was sentenced to death by a court. On Saturday, the judicial authorities announced that this verdict would be overturned. The same court is responsible for the further procedure.

Two protesters executed
Two demonstrators have already been hanged in Iran this month. Mohsen Shekari, 23, was charged with blocking a main road and stabbing a member of the paramilitary Basij militia in September. Majid Resa Rahnaward, 23, was accused of stabbing two Basij members. This militia is a paramilitary group of volunteers that is part of the powerful Revolutionary Guards. She plays an important role in the mass crackdown on demonstrators.

According to human rights organization Amnesty International, the authorities are demanding the death penalty for at least 21 people. She speaks of mock trials to intimidate demonstrators. On Friday, 506 people were reported killed in the nationwide protests, including 69 minors and 66 security forces. More than 18,500 protesters were arrested.

The trigger was the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini on September 16 in police custody. The vice squad arrested her for dressing inappropriately. Meanwhile, anti-government protests since 1979 have become the biggest challenge for the political leadership. At that point, the Shah was overthrown and the Islamic Republic was proclaimed. Street signs bearing the chief’s name have already been torn down. At meetings, participants openly demand the fall of the current leadership.
