An eight-year-old boy survived five days among lions in northern Zimbabwe. The boy, who got lost while playing, slept on a ledge at night to protect himself from the big cats.
MP Mutsa Murombedzi posted on Twitter about the rescue of the eight-year-old girl, which she described as a “miracle”. Tinotenda Pudu got lost in the ‘unforgiving’ Matusadona Wildlife Park. As the BBC reports, around 40 lions live there – according to the NGO African Parks, the area used to have one of the highest lion densities in Africa.
Drums were supposed to guide the boy home
The local community had launched a major search operation after Tinotenda’s disappearance. They also beat the drums every day so the eight-year-old could use the sound to find his way back to civilization – but to no avail.
The politician’s message:
Rangers found ‘fresh little human footprints’
The boy was eventually found by park rangers – when the eight-year-old heard their car, he ran towards it, but narrowly missed it. But when rangers passed the site again and discovered “new small human footprints,” Tinotenda was eventually found after a search of the area.
“It was probably his last chance to be rescued after five days in the wilderness,” says Murombedzi. During his stay in the park he ate wild fruits and got water by digging a kind of small well in dry riverbeds with a stick. He knew this survival trick because he grew up in an area prone to drought.
