AUA parent company Lufthansa will seek compensation from climate activists from the ‘Last Generation’ group, which paralyzed operations at Frankfurt airport for several hours on Thursday morning.
According to a Lufthansa spokesperson, the exact extent of the damage is currently being determined and will be significantly higher than previous claims for damages against the climate adhesives.
According to the report, Lufthansa had filed damage claims amounting to 740,000 euros for the climate adhesives for the asphalt occupations at the airports in Hamburg, Düsseldorf and Berlin, reports “Bild”.
Flight operations were halted for three hours
Cancelled flights, long queues, restless travellers: in the middle of the holiday season, climate protesters paralysed operations at Frankfurt Airport for three hours with a sustained campaign.
According to airport operator Fraport, at least 270 of the 1,400 flights scheduled for Thursday have been cancelled. The disruption caused six connections between Vienna and Frankfurt and two flights between Salzburg and Frankfurt to be cancelled.
The issue of better protection of critical infrastructure has already been discussed politically. Last week, the German Federal Cabinet initiated a tightening of the Aviation Safety Act, but no decision has been made on this yet and therefore does not apply to the current incidents.
Prison sentences possible in the future
In the future, the law will punish “willful, unlawful encroachment” on, among other things, the asphalt and runways with up to two years in prison or a fine. Until now, only a fine has been due.
