24 years in prison – human rights activists in Iran again sentenced to prison

Date:

Human rights activist Arash Sadeghi has been sentenced to more than five years in prison in Iran. He now faces a total of 24 years in prison. In addition, the judiciary imposed an exit ban and a ban on internet activities.

Sadeghi was sentenced to 19 years in prison in 2013. A few years later, he went on a months-long hunger strike – but in vain. Sadeghi was not released until spring 2021. The 36-year-old suffers from a bone tumor and is said to have been tortured in detention.

internet ban
Amnesty International speaks of “unfair trials” and, together with the UN and other human rights organizations, has been calling for the release of the activist for years. As the newspaper “Shargh” reported on Thursday, the man has now been sentenced to more than five years in prison. In addition, the Iranian judiciary imposed an exit ban and a ban on internet activities. Sadeghi’s wife Golrokh Iraee is a writer and was also in prison years ago.

As reported, the internet in Iran is repeatedly restricted in the run-up to protests. A week ago it was officially justified with an exam phase at the universities and concerns about possible fraud. The protests against the repressive government and Islamic rule system have plunged the political leadership into one of the most serious crises in decades.

confessions under torture
The protests, which began in September, have consistently killed and arrested people. Death sentences are also carried out. The charges must always be vague – espionage, for example – and confessions must be obtained through torture.
