Austrian Airlines (AUA) will soon resume flights that were suspended after the Iranian airstrike on Israel. “We will fly to Tehran again from May,” a spokeswoman for the airline said on Tuesday when asked. The first Austrian Airlines flight to Tehran will depart on Thursday, May 2.
After a thorough safety assessment together with AUA parent company Lufthansa, “Lufthansa Group Airlines can resume using Iranian airspace or begin the operation to Tehran,” the AUA spokeswoman explained.
Lufthansa will start at a later date
According to the AUA spokeswoman, Lufthansa also aims to quickly resume flights to and from Tehran. However, due to the distance between Germany and Iran, a short stay with a return flight on the same day is not possible. For safety reasons, the airline does not want the crew to disembark and spend the night in Tehran, as is necessary under labor law due to the length of the flight route. That is why Lufthansa will go directly on board at a later date with an overnight stay.
The airspace was unsafe due to drone attacks
Iran carried out a major attack on Israel on April 13 with hundreds of drones and missiles. The attack was seen as a response to a suspected Israeli attack on the Iranian embassy in Damascus. In early April, two generals and five other members of the powerful Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) were murdered in the Syrian capital. Since the 1979 revolution in Iran, the US and Israel have been considered arch enemies of the Islamic Republic.
Due to the tense situation in the Middle East, the AUA also suspended flights to Amman, Erbil and Tel Aviv on April 19 as a “precautionary measure”. “Flights to Amman, Erbil and Tel Aviv resumed on April 20,” the spokeswoman emphasized on Tuesday. “The safety of our crews and passengers is our top priority.”
