Car production closes 2022 with 5.8% positive

Date:

Positive conclusion for the Spanish automotive industry, which ended the year 2022 with a
boom of 5.8% thanks to its 2,219,462 units assembled in the 13 factories within our borders.

The previous year it finished just under 2.1 million, down 8%, mainly driven by semiconductor shortages, a bigger impact than the 2020 health crisis, which shut down factories completely for two years.

Now the second half of 2022 seems to have put the chip worries behind it, with continued production growth in the second half of the year – something relatively easy compared to centers unable to produce at full capacity in 2021 – but still far from target of three million units set by the national association of manufacturers, Anfac.

However, the supply problems of key components have not been forgotten – the organization describes them as “intermittent” – and show that the industry is dependent on other regions of the world to operate normally.

Now Anfac warns “of the new bottleneck caused by problems with vehicle distribution, both by sea and by road, which could limit Spain’s export capacity this year.” And of course, plants are not immune to other macro effects such as inflation, the price of energy and the rise in raw material costs.

Of the 2.2 million Made-in-Spain vehicles,
1,881,164 were destined outside our borders, 3.3% more than in 2021. The main destination remains Europe, accounting for 89% of the export share, 12.2% more than a year ago. The ranking is led by France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom and Turkey

Electrified models, regardless of support level, accounted for 268,071 units of the total, up 37.5% from 2021 and increasing their share by nearly three percentage points, to 12.1%.

The Franco-Italian-American group ended the year with the highest production quota of all groups active in Spain – it is also the one with the most factories -,
with 38.4% of the total and 851,661 models assembled7.9% less than a year ago.

It also reaches an important milestone in our country, as it is the first time to exceed 100,000 electric vehicles, which is 112,768. The consortium produces 16 models from five brands, 12 of which are 100% electric.

Of the three factories it has, only one recorded a decline before 2021. However, this was the one with the highest volume, so the impact was severe. Vigo, who assembles the commercials
Peugeot Rifter, Citroen Berlingo, Opel Combo and Fiat Doblófell 18.1% to end the year with 404,585 units.

Zaragoza and Madrid, on the other hand, ended the year in the black with production of 365,263 and 81,813 units, increases of 2.9% and 7.6% respectively.
