Women banned – NGOs stopped working in Afghanistan

Date:

After the Taliban called for a ban on women working for non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in Afghanistan, several aid organizations have now ceased their work. People cannot be reached without female employees, according to the company. Thousands of jobs would be affected.

“We cannot reach children, women and men in need without our female employees,” aid organizations Care, Save the Children and the Norwegian Refugee Agency said on Sunday. “As we gain clarity on this announcement, we are suspending our programs and demanding that both women and men continue to provide lifesaving assistance in Afghanistan.” Thousands of jobs would be affected by the Taliban’s demands. The NGO International Rescue Committee had previously spoken of more than 300 workers in the country as critical to the “delivery of humanitarian aid”.

Taliban: Women don’t wear hijab
The Afghan Ministry of Economic Affairs demanded in a letter on Saturday that employees of all national and international NGOs be suspended until further notice. The reason is that women do not follow the rules of the Taliban leadership about wearing a hijab, a headscarf. Organizations that do not comply with the order must revoke their license.

global criticism
The announcement by the militant Islamists caused concern around the world. For example, UN Secretary General António Guterres, representatives of the EU Commission and German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock condemned the move. “This decision will undermine the work of numerous organizations helping the most vulnerable across the country, especially women and girls,” Guterres spokesman Stéphane Dujarric said in New York on Saturday (local time). The United Nations and its partners are currently providing humanitarian assistance to more than 28 million Afghans.

European Commission spokeswoman Nabila Massrali spoke of a “clear violation of humanitarian principles.” The EU is currently assessing the impact the ban will have on its aid to Afghanistan. Since the Taliban came to power in August 2021, they have massively curtailed the rights of women in Afghanistan. Many women were not allowed to return to their jobs. On Tuesday, women were banned from all colleges. Girls and women are now largely excluded from public life.
