Drosten and colleagues: Pandemic is over

Date:

Good news from renowned German virologist Christian Drosten: According to the expert, the corona pandemic is over. “This winter we are experiencing the first endemic wave with SARS-CoV-2, in my opinion the pandemic is over,” the head of virology at the Berlin University Hospital Charité told the “Tagesspiegel”. Other virologists had recently made similar statements.

After this winter, the immunity of the population will be so broad and resilient that the virus will hardly be able to get through in the summer. The only limitation mentioned by virology was another mutational jump. “But I don’t expect that at the moment.”

Only smaller waves in the future
In an interview with the editorial network Germany (RND), intensive care physician Christian Karagiannidis, who is also a member of the German federal government’s Corona Expert Council, answered affirmatively whether the pandemic would be over after the winter. “I expect the pandemic to be phased out now,” Karagiannidis told RND. There will certainly be one or two small waves, but the immunity level of the population is solid and there are significantly fewer Covid patients in intensive care units.

Pathogen is now known to the human immune system
Several German experts, such as the chairman of the Permanent Vaccination Commission (Stiko), Thomas Mertens, now share the assessment that Corona is now endemic. According to him, a pandemic is mainly determined by the fact that a globally unknown pathogen with which people have no immunological experience breaks into the population. That is no longer the case, said Mertens at the end of October.
