In the Russian-occupied town of Makiivka in the Luhansk region of eastern Ukraine, several men killed and robbed a family of eight. According to reports from Russian and Ukrainian media, four children are among the victims. The suspects are mercenaries of the infamous Wagner group.
A car, money and mobile phones were stolen during the robbery. The family died with automatic weapons on Monday evening. All of the victims – including a child just one year old – were shot in the head. According to the Russian state news agency TASS, three suspects have been arrested.
The dead are said to belong to the Roma ethnic group
Anton Gerashchenko, an adviser to the Interior Minister of Ukraine, reported on Telegram that the dead were members of the Roma ethnic group. “It cannot be ruled out that ethnic hatred also drove the wild Wagnerians to this massacre,” Gerashchenko wrote.
According to Ukrainian media reports, those arrested are members of the private Russian mercenary group Wagner, which recently recruited new members in Russian prisons. There is currently no independent confirmation of the information.
Recruited 35,000 mercenaries in prisons
As Russian prison rights activist Olga Romanova recently explained, some 35,000 prisoners have already been released early from Russian prisons to wage war against Ukraine for Moscow.
“Within 24 hours, murderers and robbers will be released with long prison terms,” imprisoned Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny, who himself saw recruitment by the Wagner group in prison, wrote in a letter.
