The Spanish government is abolishing VAT on all basic foodstuffs for six months and reducing it on other products.

This was announced by the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez abolishes the 4% VAT for six months that is applied to all staple foods, including bread or milk, and reduces oil and pasta to Dealing with the consequences of the war in Ukraine and rising inflation.
Let’s take a look at the discount applied to the different food products:
– Basic essentials or super discounted products
VAT on food in Spain varies between the reduced rate (10%) and the super reduced rate (4%). For example, in basic products such as bread, milk, eggs, vegetables, legumes or fruit, the usual 4% VAT will be completely abolished next semester.
– Reduced rate food
Meat, fish, oil or pasta are considered reduced rate and are usually subject to 10% VAT, which is now reduced to 5% in the case of the latter two.
– Other products
There are certain foods that do not fit into any of these categories, such as sugary or alcoholic drinks, to which the general VAT rate of 21% applies.
Sánchez has confirmed that the government will “ensure that the VAT cuts are immediately passed on to food prices”.
