In the afternoon, during a mountain hike near Hallstatt in Upper Austria, a 24-year-old from Graz reported one last time: “I don’t feel well!” In the dark, the mountain rescuers then made the terrible discovery.
The mountain rescuers from Hallstatt did everything they could to save the life of the missing person. But on Tuesday evening there was no more help for the 24-year-old Canadian, who lives in Graz and is said to have visited relatives in the Salzkammergut. The helpers, who had climbed Vorderen Hirlatz (1934 meters) at the risk of their lives, could only find the body of the missing person, who had apparently frozen to death.

“At 3:18 p.m., the mountain rescue service was alerted after the young man called relatives. He was not well, he said and asked for help,” reports Christoph Preimesberger, head of the mountain rescue service in Upper Austria, when asked by “Krone”. The alerted rescuers were unable to connect with the unaccompanied hiker after the police helicopter searched for him. Although the crew discovered footprints in the snow – from an altitude of 1200 meters it had snowed overnight – the wanted person remained missing.
“Four comrades were flown in at last light,” Preimesberger said. In the darkness, the mountain rescuers finally followed the tracks and found the missing person. But he was dead, probably frozen to death. The rescue took place Wednesday evening.
