New Russian attacks have been reported from the southern Ukrainian city of Kherson. Russian forces fired 33 rockets at civilian targets in the 24 hours to Wednesday morning, the Ukrainian General Staff said. In addition, inhabited areas on the right bank of the Dnipro River near the regional capital were shelled with mortars and artillery.
More than 700 critical infrastructure objects have been destroyed in Ukraine since the start of the war. These “are about gas pipelines, substations, bridges and the like,” Ukraine’s Deputy Interior Minister Yevgeny Jenin said on television on Wednesday. In all, more than 35,000 objects were shot down by Russian forces, he added.
Since October, the Russian military has been specifically targeting energy supply systems in Ukraine. Ukraine’s power grid has been badly damaged by constant fire from rockets, cruise missiles and kamikaze drones. This repeatedly leads to sudden emergency stops.
Heavy fighting for the city of Bakhmut
On the front in eastern Ukraine, the heaviest fighting was around the town of Bakhmut (pictured above), which has been under heavy attack by Russian forces for months, and further north in the towns of Swatowe and Kreminna. Here the Ukrainian forces are trying to break through Russian positions.
The frontline has changed little, but Russian pressure has increased as Russia has deployed additional tanks, armored vehicles and soldiers in combat zones, says Ukrainian military analyst Oleh Zhdanov. Attacks were also reported in Kharkiv in northeastern Ukraine.
Russians lost more than 100,000 soldiers
The Ukrainian General Staff also released the latest figures on Russian casualties via news agency Ukrinform on Wednesday. Accordingly, Russia has already “lost” 103,770 soldiers – reportedly 550 on Tuesday alone. In addition, there were more than 3,000 destroyed tanks and 6,000 armored vehicles. 283 fighter jets and 267 helicopters are said to have been shot down. The figures cannot be independently verified.
