Disputes between Serbia and Kosovo escalate in the Balkans. After Serbia alerted the army about rising tensions with the government in Pristina, Kosovo closed Merdare, the main border crossing with the neighboring country, on Wednesday.
Kosovo’s foreign ministry said those traveling in Serbia should use other border crossings or enter the country through North Macedonia. There are currently only three transitions open.
Thousands have to make a detour
The blockade of Merdare has had a particularly serious impact on Kosovo, as thousands of Kosovars who work abroad and want to travel home for the holidays are forced to take a detour. In addition, Merdare is the most important border crossing point for trucks.
Against the backdrop of the new tensions, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic visited an army barracks in the town of Raska, some ten kilometers from the border with Kosovo. Vucic had put the army on edge and thanked all members of the security forces who would do everything they could to protect the Serbs in Kosovo.
