Meter was in the box – Viennese entrepreneurs: ‘Pay electricity costs for nothing’

Date:

The high electricity costs are currently making people shake their heads in many places. But a bill of almost 4100 kWh despite the lack of a connection is now a matter for the lawyer.

Reinhard Russ runs a family business at 215 Heiligenstädter Straße in Döbling. The old company building was starting to show its age. “According to the authorities, we had to have it demolished in August. To do this, it had to be without electricity, gas and water. So we had all the pipes and the various meters dismantled and disposed of by a responsible company,” says the manager. That happened in early June. The demolition work lasted until the end of August. In September, the company’s electricity meter was connected again.

“There’s Nothing Going On Here”
So far so good. “When I got the bill in October, I couldn’t believe my eyes. Even though the meter was sealed and not plugged in at all, I would have used almost 4,100 kWh of electricity,” says Russ irritably.

The entrepreneur suspects a technical defect in the digital meter. After asking the Wiener Netze, it was sent for testing. Result: “Okay.” Russ: “Nothing is okay. I’m now paying hundreds of dollars for nothing. I’ve turned this over to my lawyer.”
