Hardly any vaccination is as controversial as the corona vaccination. However, no vaccine has been as well researched as it has been. More than 13 billion vaccine doses against the virus have now been administered worldwide. In Austria there were so far 20 million. The number of vaccine damages caused by the corona vaccination? Still manageable.
Anyone who has received the vaccination and has unexpectedly suffered side effects and damage can submit an application for vaccination damage. “There is a vaccine damage law for that, which allows people to claim damage,” explains Katharina Reich, Director General of Public Health, in the morning news of Ö1. “And if we look at the numbers now, we have administered 20 million corona vaccinations since the vaccines were available, and the claim for vaccine damage is in the per-thousand range.”
Requests, confirmed cases, compensation
The bare numbers: so far 1619 applications have been submitted for damage due to vaccination, with the health effects of the vaccination described by those affected as fatigue, headache, dizziness, but also thrombosis, myocarditis or chronic fatigue. Vaccine harm was recognized in 50 cases of the 1,619 applications, Reich said. 38 of them received a one-off payment of 2000 euros, 12 a monthly pension of around 700 euros.
Monthly recipients of such compensation payments include, for example, people with pre-vaccination heart damage, who have developed inflammation of the heart muscle and are now experiencing permanent loss of performance. This also includes people who have suffered nerve damage, for example due to thrombosis, and can therefore walk poorly.
Who decides whether it is vaccine damage or not? A consultation with the doctor is of course necessary in any case, several findings may be needed. Specifically, there is a “clear schedule for doctors to fill in”, for example with regard to symptoms. Then it is the turn of medical experts to judge whether the research results are sufficient for the diagnosis of vaccine damage or whether more findings are missing.
Vaccination harm often “diagnose exclusion”
Reich emphasizes that no proof is necessary, “but the probability is enough. The medical damage that can clearly be traced back to the vaccination does not have to be documented in black and white. There are many cases where this is a so-called exclusion diagnosis – so there is no other way around it than that the vaccination is probably the cause of the symptoms. Even these cases would be awarded, Reich said.
For the head of the vaccination department of the Medical Association, Rudolf Schmitzberger, it is still clear with regard to the corona vaccination: “After all the billions of vaccinations that have been administered, we know that vaccinations always mean a risk reduction” – and also “that the serious complications arise from the Covid disease and not from the vaccination”.
Incidentally, so far there have been eleven complaints against a rejection of a vaccination claim – in three cases the complaint has been rejected, eight are still being processed.
